Two Leading Math Brands to Develop a Co-Branded Electronic Placement Testing Product that Transforms How Colleges and Universities Assess Students’ Knowledge of Math
WATERLOO, CANADA, July 25, 2005 – Maplesoft™, the leading provider of high-performance software tools for engineering, science and mathematics, announced today a partnership with the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), the largest professional society that focuses on undergraduate mathematics. The organizations plan to develop a co-branded electronic placement testing product that will dramatically change how colleges and universities assess students’ knowledge of math.
The new product will replace the MAA’s placement tests, which have been widely used and highly regarded by colleges and universities across North America. The new tests will be powered by Maplesoft’s Maple T.A., a powerful Web-based system for creating tests, assignments and exercises.
"The MAA’s goal is to transform a traditional paper-based placement testing process to electronic format and delivery that incorporates the best elements of testing theory and information technology," said John Kenelly, Treasurer of the Mathematical Association of America. "Automating our placement tests will help schools streamline the placement of students in the proper programs. It will also save schools a significant amount of time and money in administering, grading and analyzing the tests."
"Placement tests need not be a burden to institutions and students," said Jim Cooper, CEO of Maplesoft. "Automating the MAA’s tests will provide a modern, efficient approach to this important aspect of higher education. Computer-based placement tests will allow colleges to concentrate on the students and not the process of administering the exams. They will also greatly reduce the stress and chaos associated with taking the tests, as students can take automated tests anywhere at anytime."
