Automakers Focus on Soft Money
By Terry Costlow

"The Impala engine program also highlights the growing use of mathematical modeling. Many aspects of the engine, including the virtual sensors, were based on math models that were used to set the stage for programmers writing the code. Math modeling is very precise, and is more easily understood than other techniques such as block diagrams."

"Mathematical modeling is becoming a common way for hardware and software engineers to communicate ideas about how the system will operate. These models also help engineers who want to pick up a piece of code but want to make sure they fully understand what it does and how it works."
