How to Transform Your Math Class into a Thinking Classroom Experience

In recent years, there has been growing interest in the idea of transforming math classes into “thinking classrooms”. In the book Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, author Peter Liljedahl defines a thinking classroom as "a classroom that is not only conducive to thinking but also occasions thinking, a space that is inhabited by thinking individuals as well as individuals thinking collectively, learning together, and constructing knowledge and understanding through activity and discussion." While this book focuses on high school math classes, math technology makes it possible to implement many of the recommended strategies in college and university math courses, whether they are in-person, blended/hybrid, or fully online.

This talk explores how technology empowers math educators to achieve the objective of a "thinking classroom” by helping you engage your students in interactive activities that naturally foster collaboration, discussion, and effective practice. Examples will be given using various technologies from the Maplesoft Mathematics Suite, which include features that are uniquely suited to supporting many aspects of a thinking classroom.
