Keynote Speakers

Dr. Keith Geddes
Inventor of Maple and founder of Maplesoft

Dr. Geddes is one of the two researchers who, in 1980, initiated the University of Waterloo research project that lead to the creation of the Maple system.  In 1988 he was a co-founder of Waterloo Maple Inc. and remains active with the company serving on the company's Board of Directors. As a principal investigator for the Ontario Research Centre for Computer Algebra (ORCCA), he continues to conduct leading edge research in mathematical computation.  Dr. Geddes has been a faculty member since 1973 in the Department of Computer Science, University of Waterloo.

C. Jim Cooper
President and CEO, Maplesoft

Mr. Cooper brings over 20 years of experience in corporate management of advanced technology business ventures to his role as President and CEO of Maplesoft. Prior to joining Maplesoft, Mr. Cooper held a number of senior positions with high technology companies. For example, he was Worldwide Director for Intelligent Networks with Sema Group Wireless; Divisional Manager at SCI, a world renowned 3D graphics company; and Development Manager at CAE, makers of advanced aircraft flight simulators.

In addition, he has successfully developed a number of high technology startups, including Puppetworks.com, makers of motion capture devices for the 3D animation industry; Alias-Eclipse for Alias-Wavefront, creator of high-end editing software; and ISTEC, manufacturer of gyro-stabilized camera pods used extensively in the entertainment industry.

Mr. Cooper graduated on the Dean's honor list form the University of Waterloo in 1980 with a Bachelor's of Engineering.

Dr. François Cellier
President, Society for Computer Simulation

Dr. François Cellier is currently President of the Society for Modeling and Simulation International, the principal professional organization dedicated to the advancement of modeling and simulation methods and technologies. As an electrical engineer by background, he has a lifetime of experience and leadership in the effective deployment of software for modeling complex systems. He has made major contributions in key areas of particular interest to modern industry and research including: modeling from physical principles, intelligent design and control, and software development. Dr. Cellier is currently affiliated with both the Institute of Compuational Science at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Arizona.

Dr. Carl Cowan
President, Mathematical Association of America

Dr. Carl Cowen is the President of the Mathematical Association of America and the Dean of the School of Science Indiana University - Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI). He is an award-winning scholar and teacher in mathematics. His research interests include, matrix analysis, analytic functions, and mathematical neuroscience.   In addition, he has been a major contributor to the transformation and modernization of the mathematical education in North America. Chairing or serving on key committees of the MAA, AMS, SIAM, and government sponsored committees, he has strongly influenced progress in important areas such as curriculum reform, women in math and science, and excellence in mathematical scholarship.

Dr. Richard Bartels
Retired professor, Renowned authority on Computer Graphics

Dr. Richard Bartels is a retired professor from the School of Computer Science at the University of Waterloo and is an authority in computer graphics and animation. The computer graphics community know him as one of the "Killer B's" referring to his and co-authors, Beatty and Barsky's landmark book An Introduction to Splines for Use in Computer Graphics and Geometric Modeling and Animation. His research contributions have strongly influenced the computer graphics revolution of the past three decades. He has also served as a consultant for Siemens, National Bureau of Standards, and General Motors Research Laboratories. Prior to the University of Waterloo, Dr. Bartels was a faculty member of Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Texas, Austin.
