4th Annual MapleSim Academic Summer Workshop at McMaster University - Maplesoft
Workshop

Hosted by McMaster University, the goal of this workshop was to constructively engage engineering professors exploring new techniques to improve engineering education through modeling and simulation, and the MapleSim technology in particular.  This year, the theme was: Challenges and Solutions for Engineering Educators - reinforcing engineering concepts using a combination of theory, simulation and hardware to show how math can be used in a more meaningful way.

Additional sessions included presentations from other user campuses and updates from Maplesoft on technology enhancements and roadmaps.  In addition, there was a half-day hands-on tutorial on MapleSim, which allowed new users to get a compact introduction to the key techniques.

About the Presenters

Dr. David E. Goldberg

Based in Douglas, Michigan, Dr. David Goldberg is President of ThreeJoy Associates, Inc. a training, consulting, and coaching firm and Co-Founder of Big Beacon, a global movement for the transformation of engineering education. Prior to founding ThreeJoy & Big Beacon, Goldberg was the Jerry S. Dobrovolny Distinguished Professor in Entrepreneurial Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he was known for his path-breaking research in genetic algorithms and evolutionary computation, for his role in co-founding ShareThis, Inc (www.sharethis.com), as well as his work as co-founder and co-director of the Illinois Foundry for Innovation in Engineering Education (iFoundry). Goldberg holds BSE, MSE, and PhD degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Michigan and a Certificate in Leadership Coaching from Georgetown University. His first book, Genetic Algorithms in Search, Optimization & Machine Learning is among the 10 most cited computer science references on Google Scholar. His 2002 text The Design of Innovation explores the connection between evolutionary computation and genetic algorithms and processes of human creativity and innovation. His two most recent books are The Entrepreneurial Engineer and Philosophy and Engineering: An Emerging Agenda (edited with Ibo van de Poel). Dave continues hands-on educational transformation through regular assignments as a trainer, coach, and advisor to senior leadership, most recently at Illinois, TUDelft, Singapore Polytechnic, NUS, and the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG).

Dr. Bruce Char
Dr. Bruce Char is a Professor of Computer Science at Drexel University. Dr. Char received his B.A. in Mathematics from Swarthmore College and his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California at Berkeley. He works in the areas of symbolic and numeric mathematical computation, parallel computation, interactive multimedia for education, and problem-solving environments. Dr. Char was instrumental in developing Maple, a general purpose computer algebra system that performs both symbolic and numerical calculations and has facilities for interactive two- and three-dimensional graphics. Prior to joining the Drexel faculty, he was a professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Dr. Char is a member of the Association for Computing Machinery, the Mathematical Association of America, the IEEE Computer Society, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He is the author or co-author of five books and more than 70 articles and papers
Dr. Thomas Doyle P.Eng., Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering, McMaster University
Dr. Doyle is an Assistant Professor at McMaster University. His teaching interests include McMaster’s freshman program including the cornerstone design course. Dr. Doyle is a leading member of the faculty team, enriching and transforming McMaster’s curriculum to meet emerging challenges of the profession. His research interests include biomedical signal processing, human-computer interfacing, and machine learning. Dr. Doyle earned his PhD at the University of Western Ontario. He is a member of the ASEE, CEEA, and IEEE, among other societies.

Dr. James Andrew Smith, PhD, PEng.
Dr. Smith specializes in Biomedical Engineering at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada.  He was Biomedical Engineering Program Director in 2010/11 and is currently Biomedical Engineering Stream Coordinator.  His research combines aspects of biomechanics and robotics, with active research projects in legged systems, obstetrics and surgical systems.
James Andrew Smith received BSc and MSc degrees in Electrical Engineering at the University of Alberta in 1998 and 2001, respectively. In 2006 he completed a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at McGill University.  From 2006 to 2008 he conducted research on legged systems University of Jena's Lauflabor Locomotion Laboratory in Jena, Germany.

In addition to teaching awards received at the University of Alberta, he is a recipient or co-recipient of four IEEE Real World Engineering Projects awards from 2007 to 2010.  He was co-recipient of second place in the recent design competition at the 2012 Healthcare Innovation Conference in Houston Texas.
