Theory and Practice of Symbolic Integration in Maple

While certain aspects of integration are well understood in theory (the Risch algorithm has "solved" the problem of indefinite integration for many classes of problems) there are still many practical issues to resolve in order to be able to compute symbolic integrals in Maple.

This presentation will given an introduction to some of these theoretical results and discuss some of the ways we resolve those practical hurdles inside Maple's integration engine.

Presenter: John May

Short Bio: John May is a Senior Developer in the Mathematical Software Group and has been with Maplesoft since 2007. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the School of Computer Science at the University of Waterloo. He holds a Ph.D in Mathematics from North Carolina State University as well as Masters and Bachelors degrees from the University of Oregon. He has been working on research in computational mathematics since 1997.
