Exponential Growth

A process exhibits exponential growth if it can be represented by a function of the form $f\left(x\right)=c\cdot {a}^{r\cdot x}$, where $c>0$ and either

 1 $a>1$, and $r>0$; or
 2 $0 and $r<0$.

Exponential Decay

A process exhibits exponential decay if it can be represented by a function of the form $f\left(x\right)=c\cdot {a}^{r\cdot x}$, where $c>0$ and either

 1 $0, and $r>0$; or
 2 $a>1$, and $r<0$.

Radioactive isotopes decay over time by emitting what physicists call alpha and beta particles and gamma rays. This is an exponential decay process.
