The Maple Adoption Program has changed!

Maple Adoption Program

The free home-use copy of Maple that instructors receive when they register their fall courses with the Adoption Program will now never expire. In addition to a free copy of Maple, with their fall registration professors are entitled to a free, 90-day evaluation copy of one of several Maple add-on products.

We’ve also introduced a new Adoption Program Student Center. The Adoption Program Student Center offers resources and support through an online discussion forum available exclusively to students participating in the Maple Adoption Program.

These are just a few of the many changes we’ve made to the program.

To learn more about the Maple Adoption Program, watch the recorded webinar “Introduction to the Maple Adoption Program.

Maplets for Calculus receives National Science Foundation Grant

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a grant to Dr. Douglas Meade of the University of South Carolina and Dr. Philip Yasskin of Texas A&M University to further develop their program "Maplets for Calculus" and to evaluate its effect on calculus teaching. This Course, Curriculum, and Laboratory Improvement grant, awarded by the NSF Division of Undergraduate Education, will last for three years.

Maplets for Calculus is an award winning collection of 94 Maple applets for calculus students and instructors. Recently, the Maplets for Calculus developers, Dr. Yasskin and Dr. Meade, were presented the 11th annual ICTCM Award for "excellence and innovation in using technology to enhance the teaching and learning of mathematics.”

Application Center Highlights

Hollywood Math
Author: Maplesoft

Over its storied and intriguing history, Hollywood has entertained us with many mathematical moments in film. John Nash in “A Beautiful Mind,” the brilliant janitor in “Good Will Hunting,” the number theory genius in “Pi,” and even Abbott and Costello are just a few of the Hollywood “mathematicians” that come to mind. This document highlights just a few examples of mathematics in film, and how Maple can work with them.

E-Symposium: Challenges and Solutions In Implementing Technology In Distance Education in STEM Programs
Wednesday, September 24, 2008 12:00 pm EDT.

Distance education programs have become a key dimension in collegiate education and society’s need for rich lifelong learning is demanding an ever higher quality in these programs. Of course, technology has been a major enabling factor in the growth of distance education. Innovative content delivery and management systems have transformed the days of mail-in assignments and audio tapes to fully online and highly interactive learning and collaboration environments. As successful as the technology has been, the delivery of programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) has faced unique challenges and to this day, remains problematic. STEM courses have demanding content such as mathematics, models, and simulations. Even something as basic as the composition and display of mathematical equations can be problematic. Today, many educators are overcoming these challenges through the innovative application of the newest generation of education technology as well as insights gained from extensive deployment of technology for traditional on-campus STEM programs.

Dr. Annette Burden has over 30 years of experience in innovative education. In addition to actual teaching she has been a major driver for the modernization of distance education programs at Youngstown State and other institutions. In addition, she is an expert advisor to leading technology and information companies such as Maplesoft and Pearson Education. Her research interests include education technology and numerical analysis.

Highly Recommended Math Software Interacts Directly with CAD Applications

Cadalyst Magazine, August 8, 2008
This review, in a leading CAD magazine, highlights Maple 12’s direct connectivity with CAD applications. The reviewer, while “highly recommending” Maple 12, quips that “if NASA had used it for the Mars probe – the one that was lost because of an incorrect conversion between standard and metric measurements – it probably wouldn’t have lost it in the first place.”
