New Clickable Calculus Study Guide Exploits Interactive Techniques to Help Students Learn

E-book also acts as a guide to Maple’s Clickable Math approach

Waterloo, Canada; May 23, 2014: Maplesoft™ today announced the release of an all-new Calculus Study Guide based on Maple™, the mathematical computing software for education and research in mathematics, engineering, and the sciences. This completely new second edition takes advantage of Maple’s Clickable Math approach to cover introductory courses in differential and integral single-variable calculus, making this fundamental subject more easily understood by students.

The guide provides over 450 worked examples taken from more than 65 topics. Almost all the problems are solved using interactive, point-and-click methods, allowing students to focus on the mathematical concepts instead of the mechanical details. Summaries of key concepts are provided for each topic. These summaries make use of Maple’s extensive visualization abilities, including illuminating animations that could never be found in a traditional, static study guide or textbook.

For instructors, this guide can act as a manual on how to implement calculus in Maple using Clickable Math techniques. With its systematic coverage of all of single-variable calculus, instructors can quickly learn how to leverage Maple’s computation and visualization abilities in the classroom to provide students with engaging, illuminating examples of important concepts. Because the examples are done using Clickable Math, neither the instructor nor the student needs to spend time learning syntax or memorizing commands. Instead, they can immediately focus on exploring and understanding the mathematics.

“Maple’s Clickable Math approach, as demonstrated in the Calculus Study Guide, illuminates the subject matter and provides the spark that ignites understanding,” says Dr. Robert Lopez, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Maple Fellow at Maplesoft. “Students using the guide will deepen their understanding of this fundamental subject, while instructors will learn how to exploit Maple’s Clickable Math tools fully in teaching calculus, and then apply the same approach to their other courses.”

About Maplesoft
Maplesoft™, a subsidiary of Cybernet Systems Co., Ltd. in Japan, has over 25 years of experience developing products for technical education and research, offering a solution that applies to every aspect of academic life. Its product suite reflects the philosophy that given great tools, people can do great things.

Maplesoft’s core technology is the world’s most advanced symbolic computation engine, which is the foundation for all of its products, including Maple™, the technical computing and documentation environment; MapleSim™, the high-performance, multi-domain modeling and simulation tool for physical systems; and Maple T.A.™, a web-based system for creating and assessing online tests and assignments.

Maplesoft also introduced a fundamental shift in technical education through its Clickable Math™ and Clickable Engineering™ initiatives. The idea behind this shift is to create technology that will allow students and teachers to focus on the concepts, not the tool. These initiatives deliver powerful mathematics through visual, interactive point-and-click methods in Maple, while the intuitive physical modeling environment of MapleSim helps teachers to quickly demonstrate the connection between modeling concepts and the underlying mathematical theory.

Over 90% of advanced research institutions and universities worldwide, including MIT, Stanford, Oxford, the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the U.S. Department of Energy, have adopted Maplesoft solutions to enhance their education and research activities. In industry Maplesoft’s customers include Ford, Toyota, NASA, Canadian Space Agency, Motorola, and DreamWorks, covering sectors such as automotive, aerospace, electronics, defense, consumer products, and entertainment.
