<Text-field style="Text" layout="Normal">You sometimes see the <Font bold="true">subs</Font> command used to do simple substitutions. In early versions of Maple, it was the only choice, as the <Font italic="true">evaluate at a point </Font>option to <Font bold="true">eval</Font> did not exist.. However, <Font bold="true">subs</Font> does a strict syntactic substitution, and does not evaluate the results. If the developer neglects to do the evaluation afterwards, this can result in unexpected behavior (and long debugging sessions!).
