In this case, an expression was entered after an angle bracket as an attempt to use a Maple prompt (which always displays in red) within Document mode. Document mode uses document blocks as the default input region. However, it is possible to insert a Maple prompt input region while in Document mode.
Solution:
To insert a Maple prompt while in Document mode, from the Insert menu click Insert → Execution Group → After Cursor
. You can then enter your expression and press Enter to execute.
