The Electrostatic System of Units (ESU)

Description

 • The electrostatic system of units (ESU) has the centimeter, gram, second, and franklin as its base units, where the franklin is energy-equivalent to the unit square root dyne centimeter ($\frac{{\mathrm{cm}}^{3/2}\sqrt{g}}{s}$). For naming consistency, the franklin is called the abcoulomb.
 • When used in conjunction with the UseSystem command, the electrostatic system sets the following units for the given dimensions.

Dimension Name Unit Name length centimeter mass gram time second speed kyne acceleration gal energy erg force dyne power erg per second pressure barye electric current statampere electric charge statcoulomb electric capacitance statfarad magnetic inductance stathenry electric conductance statsiemens electric resistance statohm magnetic flux density stattesla electric potential statvolt magnetic flux statweber plane angle radian solid angle steradian

Examples

Electrostatic units can be converted to their energy equivalents.

 > $\mathrm{convert}\left(1,'\mathrm{units}',\frac{\sqrt{'\mathrm{dyne}'}'\mathrm{centimeter}'}{'\mathrm{second}'},'\mathrm{statampere}','\mathrm{energy}'\right)$
 ${1}$ (1)
 > $\mathrm{convert}\left(1,'\mathrm{units}',\sqrt{'\mathrm{dyne}'}'\mathrm{centimeter}','\mathrm{statcoulomb}','\mathrm{energy}'\right)$
 ${1}$ (2)
 > $\mathrm{convert}\left(1,'\mathrm{units}',\frac{{'\mathrm{cm}'}^{\frac{3}{2}}{'g'}^{\frac{1}{2}}}{'s'},'\mathrm{statcoulomb}','\mathrm{energy}'\right)$
 ${1}$ (3)

If infolevel is set to a greater integer (possible settings are 1 through 5), more detailed information about the computation method is displayed.

 > $\mathrm{infolevel}[\mathrm{Units}]:=1:$
 > $\mathrm{convert}\left(1.28523,'\mathrm{system}','W','\mathrm{ESU}'\right)$
convert/system:   "converting to the units erg/s"
 ${1.285230000}{}{{10}}^{{7}}$ (4)
 > $\mathrm{convert}\left(5.2324932,'\mathrm{system}','\mathrm{mho}','\mathrm{ESU}'\right)$
convert/system:   "converting to the units statS"
 ${4.702730361}{}{{10}}^{{12}}$ (5)
 > $\mathrm{unassign}\left('\mathrm{infolevel}[\mathrm{Units}]'\right)$
 > $\mathrm{with}\left(\mathrm{Units}[\mathrm{Standard}]\right):$
 > $\mathrm{Units}[\mathrm{UseSystem}]\left('\mathrm{ESU}'\right)$

Notes:

 – To enter a unit in 2-D Math input, select the unit from the appropriate Units palette. If the unit you want is not there, select $\mathrm{unit}$ and then enter the unit.
 – In Maple 2015 and later versions, the double brackets around a unit are not displayed unless you are editing the unit.
