A well-constructed placement test has questions that represent all difficulty levels. Use some easy items at the 10% difficulty level to sort at the lower edge of ability level. Use some items at each of the dectile levels to screen the candidates at each ability level. This builds a placement test that indicates a student’s command of the material (power test) and not speed with which it is completed. |
