"Why Implement Automated Assessment?” |
|
|
Challenge:
My teaching assistant
and I spend so much time marking assignments, quizzes
etc., that we have little time left to offer individual
help to students.
Solution: Maple T.A. automatically
does the marking for you. Results are
available seconds after the student
completes the task.
Feature:
Automatic grading. |

Challenge:
Students often inappropriately collaborate
without learning how to solve the problem themselves.
Solution: Every student gets
a different version of each question,
which is automatically generated by
the system. Collaboration involves
sharing the method, not the final answer.
Features:
• Algorithms
to generate classes of problems
•
The variables in the question are chosen
randomly using the criteria given by the
author. Criteria can be sophisticated – e.g.
Choose a, b such that a and b are integers,
0<a<=b<50, where a+b< 75.
•
The underlying Maple engine offers a large
class of generation tools; you can easily
create random polynomials with varying
degrees, prime numbers, etc. |

Challenge:
My students would benefit from more
practice, but there is not enough time to create
all these extra
problems or correct their solutions.
Solution: Maple T.A. allows
for unlimited practice. Once you have
written the base questions, the system
generates questions from those templates,
and marks the response. The student
may take the same practice again and
again, until the subject is mastered.
You can give the student hints, comments,
and worked solutions to help them learn.
Features:
• Automatic
question generation.
•
Automatic marking.
•
Different types of assignments available,
including practice sessions.
•
Varying levels of student feedback. |
