The Lorenz Attractor

The Lorenz attractor, introduced by Edward Lorenz in 1963, is a 3-dimensional system corresponding to the behavior of chaotic flow. The map shows how the state of the system evolves over time in a complex, non-repeating pattern.

Lorenz derived the system model from the simplified equations of convection rolls arising in the atmosphere and has important implications for climate and weather prediction as well as other chaotic systems.
