IEEE Spectrum Online

We are pleased to announce our sponsorship of the Mathematics Post-Secondary Preparedness Package (MP3), published by Student Awards! With our sponsorship program, our goal is to support excellence in education. MP3 exemplifies that goal.

For over 35 years, award-winning Professors Jack Weiner and Hoshang Pesotan have helped thousands of students overcome their math anxiety. They know that a large part of getting through the fear of math is having a solid foundation in high school math concepts. Their new book provides an amazing bridge between high school and college math.

MP3 includes 9 problem sets covering topics from Basic Numeracy to Exponents and Logarithms. Complete solutions are provided, along with descriptions of common errors and links to “Great Websites for More Detail”—everything needed to clear the math mental cobwebs before classes begin.

Currently we're offering MP3 for a limited time to academic customers who purchase Maple 13, but we also wanted to share this valuable resource with our existing customers as well! If you are an existing Maplesoft customer, click here to receive a free sample copy of MP3. *Available until supplies last.

If you are not yet an existing Maplesoft customer, or you'd like to upgrade, contact our Sales Department to purchase Maple 13 and receive your free Mathematics Post-secondary Preparedness Package with your purchase . Call 1-800-267-6583.

IEEE Spectrum Tech Insider Webinar Series - Getting the Most from MATLAB® and Simulink® with Symbolic Computation - Recording now available!

IEEE Spectrum OnlineThe turnout for this webinar was amazing! If you missed the live event, we are pleased to let you know that the recording is now available. Simply click on the link below and fill out the form on the IEEE's website. If you are unfamiliar with the webinar, here is a synopsis:

This webinar offers a series of powerful and practical techniques for reducing the time and effort required to develop engineering applications and models. For MATLAB® users, this means significantly greater flexibility in your applications. Although symbolic computation techniques have been an important part of the MATLAB® and Simulink® community for many years, recent developments in the technology have triggered a new generation of applications and techniques that are helping engineers respond to emerging complexities in modeling and design.

Efficient parameter analysis, a dramatically increased capability in mathematical computation, and a rich documentation environment for managing, presenting, and archiving results, are some of the immediate benefits from the appropriate symbolic strategies. In specific fields such as control systems, or dynamic modeling, the right symbolic tools can reduce modeling time from months to days while dramatically increasing model performance.

Selling a Company: Free Advice
Selling a company is emotionally wrenching. It was even more intensive for us at Maplesoft since we had a large number of founders who had been actively involved with the company for 20+ years. The decision for founders to sell a company so that it can move to the next stage is truly massive. Read More>>

The Romance of Engineering
Sometime in 1992 I was offered the title of “Applications Engineer” at Maplesoft. I was the company’s very first employee to hold this title and it was my first real job. I was thrilled! Imagine, if you will, an impoverished student who had been living on the most pitiful of incomes for almost ten years, all of a sudden being offered a great salary and the chance to travel and meet interesting people around the world! And for the most part, all I had to do was show people how great this thing called Maple was. Read More>>

3 Dof Helicopter with PID
Author: Maplesoft

The model was based on a 3 DOF helicopter from Quanser. Two DC motors are mounted at the two ends of a rectangular frame and drive two propellers. The motors axes are parallel and the thrust vector is normal to the frame. The helicopter frame is suspended from an instrumented joint mounted at the end of a long arm and is free to pitch about its centre. Read More>>

Introduction to MapleNET 13: Learn how to publish your live Maple documents on the web
Thursday, October 22, 2009 2:00 pm ET.

register

With MapleNet, publication of applications created with Maple over the Internet has never been easier: you simply create your technical document in Maple, incorporating Embedded GUI Components to allow easy interaction with the math in the document, and then save it to your MapleNet server.

Your application is then available to anyone who has access to the MapleNet server through a standard internet browser. Maple documents can be readily browsed, and the reader can change parameters using the GUI Components. The analysis is carried out by the Maple engine on the server and the results returned to the browser – it’s as simple and quick as that! No Maple is required, and no plug-ins need to be downloaded.

MapleNET also allows to create comprehensive Web applications through JSP programming, applets, or by calling MapleNET services directly from a remote Web application. We will demonstrate how to call Maple from a dynamic Web page in PHP via a MapleNET Web service.

In this one hour session you will learn how easy it is to create live online technical content building on the power of Maple. In particular you will see how easy it is to build live technical documents, and then download them to an online server.

SAE Webinar: Accelerating the Design of Embedded Control Systems for Vehicle Applications
Thursday, November 19, 2009 2:00 pm ET.

register

The computerization of automotive functionality over recent years has been nothing short of miraculous. Digital control systems have fundamentally changed the way automotive engineers think about and perform the task of design. As good as the processes are today, most OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers are openly admitting concern over emerging design challenges. Tomorrow’s cars must be greener, safer, just as fast or even faster, and cheaper than today’s cars. The consequent demands that these seemingly conflicting requirements put on the modern control system are enormous. The plant models now demand a level of fidelity that would literally suck months from an engineering team, and in many cases, resulting models may not have the speed necessary to support HIL simulations.

This seminar is about accelerating these tasks through the emerging generation of engineering modeling tools. Deploying advanced techniques such as physical modeling, symbolic computation, optimized code generation, and loss-less model simplification, engineering teams are beginning to see time savings of an order of magnitude in both the plant model development process and real-time execution. The webinar will present both the conceptual framework as well as practical application demonstrations of these techniques using the modeling system MapleSim.
